A: Not for
Facebook. But LinkedIn? That might be a good
idea.
In today's world, you can and should expect a prospective
employer to conduct a Google search of your name -- and
to then visit your social media accounts. So... all of your
social media profiles will need a good scrubbing prior to a job
search. You should be able to handle Facebook and the more
laid-back sites yourself; clean up the language, delete
inappropriate photos, and consider hiding as much as possible from
public eyes (if you haven't done so already).
LinkedIn is a different animal. For the same reason you're
considering hiring a professional writer to craft your resume, you
should consider a professional for your Linkedin profile. Over
200 million professionals use LinkedIn as a social
networking source. On it, employers can and do list jobs and search
for compatible candidates. And while users can upload their
resumes, many if not most try to design their profiles to
showcase work, training and related experience -- or at least
to augment their attached resumes. And for good reason; some
job candidates find their next employer solely through LinkedIn,
many others are helped toward the initial interview by first
impressing an employer with a resume, then further impressing with
a professional-looking LinkedIn profile page.
And for the same reason it's tough to write one's own resume
(i.e., the difficulty in phrasing one's own work
history and job qualifications in
both a promotional and unbiased manner), it's tough to
put together a compelling LinkedIn profile.
If you've got the money, have the same group who's doing your
resume tackle your LinkedIn profile. You'll look good on both paper
and website, maintain a consistent branding message, and likely
showcase elements of your professional life that you wouldn't have
thought to include. And just as importantly, you will likely leave
things off that need to be left off.
FYI, all the resume writing services listed on our home page
with at least an A or A+ rating offer LinkedIn profile services in
addition to resume development.
